How to Break In a New Hockey Stick (Without Ruining It)
Getting a new twig is exciting — but jump into a game without breaking it in properly, and you might not get the performance you're expecting.
Here’s how to break in your stick the right way:
1. Get the Feel
Before firing slapshots, stickhandle at home or on synthetic ice. Focus on puck feel and hand placement.
2. Practice Snapshots
Ease into shooting. Start with wrist shots, then snapshots — before moving to slapshots or one-timers.
3. Tape It Right
Experiment with tape patterns and grip tape. A new blade shape or texture might require different tape length or thickness.
4. Use It in Warmups
Before game day, use it in warmups or practices first. Let your hands adjust and build confidence.
